Ultrasonic biomicroscopy (B.M.U.)

The Ultrasonic biomicroscopy (UBM) is a high-resolution ultrasound technique that allows detailed analysis of the structures of the anterior eye segment, structures which otherwise stay hidden using any other means or equipments. Although it is a slow realization method compared to other techniques for studying the anterior pole. It allows the detailed analysis of the posterior eye chamber.

It is considered as a very useful technique in the phakic intraocular lens implantation and is essential in the study of certain tumors of the anterior ocular segment. Other important uses are in cases of glaucoma and postoperative follow-ups. It is a useful technique, also, in patients with media opacity and therefore the examination with other equipments can be really hindered and obstructed.
