Lens surgery

Lens surgery

Once reached the age of 40 there are different alternatives to the use of glasses: laser eye surgery or intraocular lens. The specialized surgeon will indicate if you are suitable for corrective surgery or which option is the best in your situation. Since 2001 the Instituto Oftalmológico Amigó (IOA) has been carrying out a lens surgery treatment that, in the case of suitable patients, has resolved the limitations of refractive surgery after the age of 40.

This treatment is addressed to:

  1. Those patients already using reading glasses,
  2. Those patients that need to take off their distance glasses in order to read tiny letters
  3. and those not suitable for a laser treatment

Lens surgery

To sum up, this surgery treats long-sightedness or eyestrain when it is associated with myopia or hypermetropia, with or without astigmatism; all of them typically appearing from the age of 40 onwards.

Dispensing with reading and distance glasses, your quality of life will be full of satisfaction and new opportunities.

What is the lens?

In simple words, it is a lens basically composed of protein and water inside a transparent membrane. It is suspended inside your eye, right behind the iris and which can change its form so as to focus the images depending on the distance at which they are. So, it behaves like a cinematographic camera, allowing a long-distance and short-distance focus.

This capacity partially compensates the symptoms of hypermetropia, myopia and astigmatism. Although being in a healthy state, as time goes by the lens gradually loses elasticity, thus causing long-sightedness or eyestrain at a fast pace

This situation, commonly affecting patients between 40 and 50 years old, makes the symptoms of hypermetropia and myopia much more evident and uncomfortable. As a consequence, the patient progressively needs to use reading and distance glasses. In some cases this manifests as the necessity of taking off the distance glasses so as to being able of reading.

Although natural, it is a negative process in the evolution of our quality of vision.

How to replace the lens?

It is a simple intervention. First, the eye is anesthetized with a few anesthetic drops, then a minimum incision is done at the lateral part of the eye, allowing a micro instrument to get through. Its precision permits to eliminate the protein of the lens by a means of ultrasounds. This process takes about 1 or 2 minutes and it is constantly computerized, which explains its security and speed.

Once the inside part of the distressed lens is eliminated its lost functions are recovered by the implantation of an intraocular lens as replacement. This new lens will remain fixed by the membrane (capsule), a transparent natural sheath, which is preserved.

In the following days the sight gradually recuperates. It is important to highlight that a complete functional result is not always achieved until both eyes have been operated, so the brain adapts to the recovered vision.

Since there are no two equal eyes, INFITI™ is, with the surgeon’s help, the system that can apply the adequate technology to every lens. Its ultrasounds, acting as vibrations or swaying (OZIL™) or both at the same time, can be alternated so as to assure a fast, safe and efficient procedure.

The tests, the surgery and the posterior personalized treatment are in charge of the professionals among the medical team members at the IOA, specifically accredited in this technic.

Why replace the lens?

Great advances in lens surgery have been achieved. Today, it is one of the safest operations, as well as obtaining the best results. Every year millions of people around the globe improve their vision.

This process offers the possibility of improving your quality of life, since at the same time that your refractive problems are corrected –such as myopia or hypermetropia-, you can correct long-sightedness and eyestrain as well, which cannot be treated with other surgeries.

Why a multifocal intraocular lens?

After an intervention with a monofocal intraocular lens (1), the patient usually needs reading glasses, bifocal or progressive, to read and focus near and little objects.

The multifocal intraocular lens (2) means a great qualitative jump. It uses refractive and diffractive technology (just like some microscopes and telescopes) to offer the vast majority of its patients a complete field of view; reading a magazine or stare at a landscape, and any of them without glasses. The best short-sight is obtained with a good source of light.

1. 1. With a monofocal lens we can perfectly focus objects at a long distance and, with time, some at medium distance. With a multifocal lens we can focus the objects located at a long, short and medium distances.

2. 2. According to the research conducted, 80% of the patients with implanted multifocal lens in both eyes did not need glasses for any kind of activity. The other 20% only used them occasionally for special activities such as the reading of prescriptions, sewing, etc.

Implantation of the lens

  1. First the lens is introduced in the natural lens.
  2. Once inside it expands automatically and accommodates permanently. It will remain invariably inside the eye

Is it permanent?

Regaining sight without using any glasses can be gratifying, but it is even more to think that it is forever.

Thanks to its exclusive biocompatible material and solar filters, the lens does not deteriorate and remains transparent. In addition, eyestrain does not reappear because the focusing of objects depends only on the invariable design of the multifocal implanted lens.

How does it feel?

The treatment of the lens and its implantation needs of drops of topical anesthesia, so that it is painless except for the coldness of the liquid. The complete treatment takes about 8-12 minutes per eye. It is outpatient surgery, which means that the patient can leave on his or her own after a brief break and, once at home, go on with the everyday activities. Generally a useful vision, without glasses, is possible from the very same day of the intervention.

Technology and experience

Lens surgery follows variable protocols and uses intraocular lens of different types and materials. Every year, millions of lens treatments are performed around the world.

Instituto Oftalmológico Amigó has the latest technology for these treatments, such as the system INFINITI™, including the exclusive OZIL, offering the maximum safety. We also offer the most adequate multifocal lens for each patient, allowing him/her to recover a clear sight at any distance and dispense with the glasses and contact lens.
